Junior Chemist
R & D Technician / Junior Chemist
Location: Penryn Cornwall. (onsite role)
Contract Type: Permanent/Full-Time
Salary: £30,000-£35,000
POSITION IN ORGANISATION:
Reports To: Technical Director
Responsible for: Tasks as Identified or directed
Role Purpose
To support the development, testing, optimisation, and scale- up of coating formulations for industrial applications. The R&D technician/ junior chemistry will assist with laboratory experimentation, product evaluation, raw material assessment, quality investigations, and technical documentation while developing practical knowledge of coating technologies and manufacturing processes. This is a hands-on, laboratory-based position.
Key Responsibilities:
· Support optimisation of existing products for performance, cost, processability, and regulatory compliance.
· Prepare laboratory- scale formulations and accurately record experimental work.
· Prepare coated samples for internal and customer evaluation.
· Analyse and interpret test data with guidance from senior team members.
· Assist with pilot and production trials.
· Help investigate manufacturing issues and customer complaints.
· Assist with SDS/TDS documentation and technical reporting.
· Follow laboratory safety procedures and COSHH requirements.
· Maintain clean and organised laboratory working areas.
· Ensure safe handling and storage of chemicals and solvents and participate in risk assessments and safe systems of work.
Qualifications and Experience:
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent higher scientific qualification, such as an HND or HNC.
· Experience in a laboratory environment, particularly within the coatings industry, would be beneficial.
Skills and Competencies:
· Good understanding of chemistry, with experience in coating formulations considered an advantage.
· Good laboratory practise and attention to detail.
· Competent in Microsoft Excel, Word, and data recording.
· Strong problem- solving mindset.
· Curious and willing to learn.
· Good communication skills.
· Organised and methodical approach to lab work.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES & WORKING PRACTICES:
· Take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work, in accordance with Section 7(a) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
· Co-operate with Kernow Coatings and with other employees so far as is necessary to enable the Company to comply with its duties under health and safety legislation, and with the Company’s Health & Safety policies and procedures, in accordance with Section 7(b) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
· Not intentionally or recklessly misuse or interfere with anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare, as required by Section 8 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
· Comply with all Kernow Coatings policies and procedures, including those contained within the Staff Handbook.
· Report without delay, were reasonably practicable, any unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, or dangerous practices (including horseplay) which may endanger persons or damage Company property.
TRAINING:
Undertake any training as required or directed in line with the support of your role or wider company requirements.
